• Denison University student Kari Hernquist lives in "The Homstead," 3 wooden cabins built in 1977 a mile from the campus, each equipped with and served by passive and active solar heating and electric systems. All electrical power for lights, stereos, well-water pumping and refrigeration is collected in 9 PV panels. The cabins are occupied by Kari and other students opting for "an alternate living option." They use a small attached greenhouse for growing herbs, they also milk goats for milk and burn wood for winter supplemental heat. Kari is proposing a project to study, upgrade and improve the existing Homestead cabins and to build at least one new superinsulated solar cabin constructed with straw bales and other ecological technologies.

Weekends are often the best, as homesteaders are typically involved with chores and projects at those times which may interest the visitor. Take the Granville exit off I-70 east of Columbus. Denison University is nine miles north. The Homestead driveway is located on U.S. 661 just a quarter mile past the back entrance to the University.
